In this article we offer you a list of the main theatres in Madrid that are worth a visit on your next trip to the capital. Check them out!

The best theatres in Madrid

Halls with centuries of history, an imposing architecture and stages that have seen some of the greatest artists in the world await you in Madrid's theatres. And, of course, an incredible line-up of shows to see. These are the ones you can't miss:

Teatro Real

One of the most majestic theatres in Madrid is the Teatro Real, located right in front of the Royal Palace in the heart of the city. This is a unique building of more than 78,000 square metres and an impressive main hall that faithfully reproduces the original one, built in 1850.

At the Teatro Real you can see mainly operas, dance performances, concerts, and recitals of great artistic and musical quality. The programme is wide-ranging, with a balance between classical and contemporary.

Teatro Lope de Vega

Another of the capital's must-sees is the Teatro Lope de Vega, one of Madrid's best theatres for musicals. This exponent of "Madrid's Broadway", as the Gran Vía theatre area is known, is home to Madrid's most famous musical, The Lion King. Other greats of the musical genre such as The Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables and Mamma Mia have also been performed in this emblematic building.

Other theatres in Madrid’s Gran Vía avenue dedicated to musicals and comedy are EDP Gran Vía, Capitol, Teatro Rialto and Coliseum. You can discover them by staying at another of Único Hotels' accommodations in the capital, The Principal Madrid, our luxury 5* hotel on Gran Vía.

Teatro Lara

Considered by many to be the most beautiful theatre in Madrid, Teatro Lara stands out both for its beautiful façade and its vibrant history, as it hasn't stopped performing since 1880. The theatre still has the royal box used by Alfonso XII and XIII, great aficionados of this art.

Today, at Teatro Lara you can find a programme for all tastes and ages: theatre, music, poetry, comedy... Many forms of artistic expression can be enjoyed in this unique space.

Teatros del Canal

One of the youngest theatres in Madrid, Teatros del Canal was inaugurated in 2009 with the aim of becoming a space for exhibition and creation and a benchmark in Europe, suitable for visitors from all over the world. Its four halls host all kinds of artistic modalities across some 37,000 square metres, be it dance, theatre, flamenco, opera, or circus. In this modern theatre you can find an offer for all audiences, including a wide range of children's shows.

Teatro de la Zarzuela

As its name suggests, Teatro de la Zarzuela is dedicated to a single genre... the Zarzuela. This style of lyrical performance, which includes both spoken and sung parts, is an important expression of Spanish culture, which is why in the 1950s an exclusive venue was created to perform it. Named a National Monument in the 1990s, the building has been completely refurbished and hides a great history, as it was completely destroyed by a fire in the early 20th century.
