Get to know the wines of Madrid

Madrid is an important wine-growing region, with more than 12,000 hectares dedicated to growing grapes for wine production.

Of these, more than 8,000 belong to the Designation of Origin (DO) of Madrid, the only capital city in the world to have its own appellation. Since it was officially approved in 1990, over fifty wineries have joined, producing 110 brands of wine that are subject to strict regulations and quality control.

Unlike the Mediterranean appellations, the DO vinos de Madrid production area faces extreme weather conditions, with highs of over 40ºC in summer and freezing temperatures in winter. The zone is divided into four sub-zones: Arganda, Navalcarnero, San Martín and El Molar, each with its own microclimate that results in a great diversity of red, white, rosé and sparkling wines. The most common varieties grown are Garnacha Tinta, Albillo Real, Malvar-Airen and Tempranillo.

The best wines of Madrid

Although it is an appellation that was born in the shadow of other great Spanish DOs such as Rioja, Ribera del Duero or Penedès, the DO of Madrid wines has been growing and gaining in reputation and quality, thus competing with other Spanish wines.

Some of the must-try wines from Madrid that can be found in supermarkets are:

  • Las Moradas de San Martin: The Garnacha wines made at Las Moradas are some of the most highly rated wines of the Madrid DO, especially its white variety Albillo Real and the red Senda.

  • Licinia Wines: Rated as the best red wine in Spain in 2009, Licinia's flagship wine is a must on the menus of the best restaurants in Madrid. Another award-winner from the same winery is Vac Muss, a pioneering wine made with the Ulises system.

  • 4 monos: The project born from the idea of four friends grows vineyards in the Sierra de Gredos and is committed to environmentally friendly winemaking, mainly from Garnacha and Albillo Real.

  • El Regajal: Made in Aranjuez and one of the most prestigious wines of the DO Madrid, this wine from Viñas El Regajal is made from Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Syrah.
